Summer is finally here! All I want to do, all day long, is hang out outside. Here in Utah we quickly go from freezing cold to blazing hot and I am so enjoying these days we're having right now in the '70s and '80s. I can't get enough! I wish so much that I was hanging out on the beach in the Caribbean, but I'll settle for my backyard for now.
One of my favorite things to do is sit on my back patio, or in my swinging chair (#ad) and read a good book. My taste in books is fairly varied, from chic-lit, true crime, faith/religious, and personal development. But I don't think there is anything better than a lazy afternoon reading some good chic-lit in the sunshine.
Some of my favorites:
I love, love, love Sophie Kinsella. I have loved almost every one of her books (there are a lot), and I've read most of them at least once. If you're new to her I can't recommend Can You Keep A Secret? (#ad) enough. It is my absolute favorite of hers. You will laugh out loud! Her Shopaholic series is also fantastic. Confessions of a Shopaholic (#ad), Shopaholic & Sister (#ad), Shopaholic to the Rescue (#ad), and Mini Shopaholic (#ad)are some of the best. She recently released I Owe You One (#ad), which I have not read yet, but it is on my list for the summer. But honestly, for a fun and easy read, you really can't go wrong with anything by Sophie Kinsella.
I also cannot get enough of Jen Lancaster. Most of her books are memoirs and they are hilarious. The titles of her books, alone, have to entice you! Bitter is the New Black (#ad), Bright Lights, Big Ass (#ad), and Such a Pretty Fat (#ad) were the first of hers that I read - and I also think I read all of those more than once. I am always on the lookout for when she releases a new book and I can't wait for the next one.
Okay, I think my new favorite is Jenny Lawson. I stumbled across her totally by coincidence and I am so glad I did. I am not kidding I laughed my arse off reading her books. She is so raw and real about difficult things, but she presents them in the greatest and most hilarious way. You must read Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things (#ad)- come on, doesn't that say it all; and also Let's Pretend this Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir (#ad). I promise you, you'll laugh your butt off too! As I write this post, I see another book You Are Here: An Owner's Manual for Dangerous Minds (#ad)that I haven't read yet - but don't worry it's high up on my list! I have no doubt it will be as great as the others.
There really are so many, I kind of don't know where to stop. I'll share just one more of my favorite authors - Liane Moriarty. I've read every single one of her books and they are all so amazing. I wouldn't say they are funny like the others I recommended, but they are so gripping, but still light enough for a fun read. I really recommend them all, but on the top of my list are What Alice Forgot (#ad), Nine Perfect Strangers (#ad), Big Little Lies (#ad) (also made into an HBO series, that sadly, I've never seen - I don't have HBO - if you've seen it, let me know how it was), and The Hypnotists Love Story (#ad).
I also have a LONG list of books on my "to read" list. I'm hoping to read these this summer. I've heard great reviews on them, and if you've read any - let me know if they're worth it. Some seem to be more "serious" than others, but I do like to mix it up a little: Where the Crawdads Sing (#ad) by Delia Owens, The Nightingale (#ad) and The Great Alone (#ad) by Kristin Hannah, Big Magic (#ad) by Elizabeth Gilbert, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business (#ad) by Charles Duhigg, The House We Grew Up In (#ad) by Lisa Jewell and Girls Burn Brighter (#ad) by Shobha Rao.
Well, there you go. Some of my favorite books and authors for you to check out and some of my "to reads" for the summer. I am always on the lookout for new recommendations as well, so if you have some favorites - share them in the comments. I hope your summer is starting off as great as mine!
